That’s When We’ll Meet

‘That’s When We’ll Meet’ begins in the 1700’s and ends in present day, connecting the lives of Welsh people who lived on the land that is now the National Botanical Gardens of Wales, to Indians during the construction of ‘The Great Hedge’. It’s a story about friendship, mythology, ritual and the colonisation of plants, people and salt.

The research and development phase has been funded via Arts Council Wales through their Creative Steps Programme (awarded in January 2024). Ideas for the project began in summer 2022, inspired by the Mycelium Residency at the National Botanical Gardens curated and led by Tina Pasotra.

The National Botanical Gardens, and the grounds they sit, on were funded largely by men who worked for the East India Company.

The title is a translation of the lyrics from the song ‘Tiri Pawanda’ by Allan Fakir.

A group of people walking in an open field. Two people closest to camera are walking together. Left: wearing a hijab, black top and grey trosuers. Right: is wearing a plaid shirt, white trousers and a red tote bag.
A photo of the painting ' the Auriol and Dashwood families'. A hazy, colonial Indian landscape in reds, browns, oranges. Underneath trees, white British men and women, dressed in 18th century clothing, are standing and seated, served by Indian men.

My Name is Not Nawab

My Name is Not ‘Nawab’ is an independent research project and ongoing documentary that began in 2023. It records my search for names of the Indian men in the painting ‘The Auriol and Dashwood Families’ currently living at the Holbourne Museum in Bath.
